I keep calling ShanghaiTech a surprising team, with good reason. The school was only established in 2013, making them one of the youngest universities in the world. They fielded their first Student Cluster Competition team at ASC18, just a few months ago, and, surprise, took second place there, along with some of the application awards – which was also a surprise.
In another surprise development, ShanghaiTech takes home the gold for the Highest HPCG Award with a near record score of 2, 034.21. Given their track record so far in competitions, I can’t keep calling them, or their results, surprising.
HPCG is probably the most real-world HPC benchmark in use today. With its use of sparse matrices, it’s much closer to the types of computation we see in today’s modeling and simulations.
ShanghaiTech’s HPCG score was just over 2% slower than the world record established by Tsinghua University at ASC18.
Germany’s FAU was slightly behind the pace with their 2013.42 score, giving them a second place finish to complement their Highest LINPACK award. The aforementioned Tsinghua came in third with Nanyang Technological University grabbing a distant fourth place.
Historically , we see nearly the same pattern as with LINPACK. A near record score at ISC18
, but not quite there. However, the average HPCG is steadily climbing as the student teams get better at optimizing the still newish benchmark.
