The SC17 Student Cluster Competition welcomed two teams from Europe, the German team of FAU/TUC and Team Poland, the pride of Warsaw. Let’s get to know them better through the miracle of video…..
Team FAU/TUC is a combined team of Friedrich Alexander University and Technical University of Munich. The team is coming off a LINPACK win at ISC17, but ran into some trouble at SC17. Lots of it was just bad luck and the kind of niggling technical problems that we have all run into with practically every tech project we undertake.
As you’ll see in the video, the team is taking their bad luck philosophically and plugging ahead in the competition, which is exactly what we love to see.
One triumph for the team is their optimization of the Born application onto GPUs. This brought the Born ‘shot’ time down to a mere seven minutes from the three hour CPU-only length. That’s one hell of an optimization.
Team Poland is a mix of students from several Warsaw area universities. We first met them at ASC16 and now, as then, they weren’t camera or microphone shy. A self-admitted emotional team, we heard all about their trials and travails at SC17.
They missed turning in their LINPACK result by a tiny 30 second margin. The team had NVIDIA V100 GPUs and needed to get some missing firmware for the accelerators. Unfortunately for Team Poland, it took them quite a while to acquire said firmware, which caused them to miss the LINPACK time limit.
They’re a fun and enthusiastic team, to say the least, and, again, not camera shy. They lay it all out there in the video posted above.
In our next article, we’ll introduce the Asian cluster competition teams….stay tuned….
