We sat* down with Brent Gorda a couple of weeks ago to talk about the history of the Student Cluster Competitions. Brent was one of the major drivers behind the first competition at SC07 in Reno. He helped come up with the competition format and procedures, and established rules that are used in every major cluster competition today.
In Part 1, we discuss where the idea for the competition originated and how they got it off the ground. During our conversation, you’ll see pictures of the 2007 event on the video track.
Brent is currently the GM of Intel’s High Performance Data Division. He was formerly the CEO of Whamcloud, and before that led the Future Technologies Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
*I was sitting in my office in Oregon during the interview. Brent may have been standing or, more likely, pacing around – he has a lot of energy.
